Nissan Sentra: The case for buying a sedan in 2025
SUVs dominate sales, but the Sentra is one of the best values in the Canadian market. Here's who should consider it and who shouldn't.
Why sedans lost the market
Between 2015 and 2022, SUV and crossover sales surged while sedan sales dropped 30–40%. The reasons: higher seating position, AWD availability, perceived utility. Automakers responded by focusing development on SUVs.The result: the remaining sedans on the market are well-engineered, competitively priced, and often overlooked.
The current Sentra (2020+)
The 2020 redesign transformed the Sentra from budget transportation to a competitive compact sedan. The 2.0L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder (149 hp) is fuel-efficient and smooth. The interior quality is significantly above previous generations. Sport seats came standard. Nissan Safety Shield 360 is included at all trims.Where it's genuinely better than an SUV
Fuel economy. The Sentra returns 7.0–7.8L/100km combined — meaningfully better than the Kicks (7.8L) or Rogue (7.1L, turbocharged).Driving dynamics. Lower centre of gravity means the Sentra handles corners more naturally than any crossover. If you drive for pleasure as much as utility, it shows.
Purchase price. A Sentra S starts under $22,000 — several thousand less than the Kicks, and $10,000+ less than a Rogue.
Parking. 4,634mm long — similar in footprint to a Rogue but a sedan profile. Easy in any lot.
Where the SUV wins
Ground clearance. BC's variable road conditions (snow, gravel) favour higher clearance. The Sentra is low — fine in most situations, not great in unploughed lots or light off-road.AWD. The Sentra is FWD-only. In the Lower Mainland's occasional snow events, this is manageable. In the Interior or mountains, it's a real limitation.
Cargo. 450L trunk vs. 580L in the Rogue with rear seats down. The Rogue wins for hauling.
The buyer this is for
Single commuters, students, urban dwellers, empty-nesters who don't need AWD or elevated seating, and anyone whose primary priority is low purchase price and strong fuel economy. At its price point, the Sentra is one of the best-engineered vehicles in Canada.Ready to put this into action?
