Financing & leasing

Leasing vs. Financing: A plain-language guide

Leases have lower payments but you don't own the vehicle. Financing costs more monthly but you build equity. Here's how to decide.

What leasing actually means

A lease is a long-term rental — typically 36 or 48 months. You pay for the vehicle's depreciation during your term, not the full purchase price. Monthly payments are lower, and you return the vehicle at the end. Excess kilometres and wear charges apply.

Lease math: If a Nissan Rogue is priced at $38,000 and is worth $24,000 at lease-end, you finance the $14,000 difference (plus interest and fees), not the full price.

What financing means

Financing means you borrow the full purchase price (minus any down payment), repay it with interest over 48–84 months, and own the vehicle outright at the end. Monthly payments are higher, but every payment builds equity.

The break-even question

Leasing is cheaper month-to-month. Financing is cheaper if you keep the vehicle past the loan term. The typical break-even is around 5–6 years of ownership.

Kilometre limits matter

Most leases cap at 20,000 km/year. BC drivers who commute or travel frequently can blow past this quickly. Overage charges run $0.08–$0.15/km — budget carefully.

When leasing wins

  • You want a new vehicle every 3 years
  • Low monthly payments are the priority
  • You drive under the kilometre cap
  • You use the vehicle for business (lease payments may be deductible — confirm with your accountant)

When financing wins

  • You plan to keep the vehicle long-term
  • You drive a lot
  • You want to modify or customize
  • You want to build equity to trade in later

Our recommendation

For most families, financing a CPO vehicle hits the best value point: lower purchase price than new, still warranty-backed, and you own it outright in 5 years.
