BC dealer fees explained: What you're actually paying for
Beyond the sticker price, several fees appear at signing. Not all of them are negotiable. Here's what each one covers.
Fees at a BC dealership
Documentation fee ($599–$799 — varies by dealer)
Covers the administrative cost of processing paperwork: title transfer, registration, PPSA search and registration, and ICBC transaction. At Morrey Nissan, this is $699. It's a real cost, not arbitrary padding — but it is a profit-bearing line item for some dealers.Negotiable? Sometimes a dealer will bundle it into pricing, but rarely waives it.
GST (5%)
Federal goods and services tax applies to the full purchase price including most fees. Non-negotiable.BC PST (7% new / varies used)
New vehicles: 7% PST on the purchase price. Used vehicles: Sliding PST rate based on purchase price:- Under $55,000: 12%
- $55,000–$55,999: 15%
- $56,000–$56,999: 18%
- And so on — rates escalate sharply at higher values
Used car tip: A $54,999 purchase price incurs 12% PST. A $55,000 purchase incurs 15%. The difference is significant on a mid-range used vehicle.
Tire levy ($7.80 — provincial)
BC charges a small tire levy on each tire sold to fund tire recycling programs. Non-negotiable; not a dealer profit item.Luxury surtax (BC — on new vehicles)
New vehicles priced over $125,000 face an additional provincial surtax. Applies to some Armada Platinum trims.PPSA (Personal Property Security Act registration)
If you're financing, the lender registers a security interest in the vehicle. Cost is $0–$80 depending on the transaction. Often included in the documentation fee.Fuel surcharge
Some dealers charge $50–$150 for a full tank. Confirm whether it's included in the price. What isn't a fee you should see
- "Nitrogen tire inflation" charges (air is free)
- "Paint protection" or "fabric protection" you didn't ask for and aren't disclosed upfront
- Dealer markup (ADM) above MSRP — common during supply shortages; rare now
